Hoyt, Brumm & Link is proud that we are USGBC certified and our chief engineer is a top-notch LEED AP. We knew what we can do as contractors hired to build a green building, but what could we do as a company to improve our own carbon footprint?
We started out small. First recycling our ink and toner cartridges, giving them to the local PTA to help out the local area schools. That was easy enough so we contracted SOCCRA to handle all of our recycling of paper and plastic products used in the office and the shop. This alone has reduced our waste by an estimated 60-70%. Now our efforts actually seemed to be making a difference.
"Why not take it a step further?" DTE Energy has an excellent rebate program they are offering to business customers to replace your traditional lighting with the more energy efficient T5 fluorescent lamps. We now have retrofitted our office and shop with the new lighting and installed sensors for some of our office lights. It is projected to save us thousands on electric bills annually, with a return on investment of less than 2 years while significantly reducing the amount of energy we consume. DTE is offering some great savings and rebate programs to residential customers as well. We encourage each household to take advantage of these offers by DTE and save both in your pocketbook and your carbon footprint. http://www.dteenergy.com/residentialCustomers/saveEnergy/
